Safety In The Workplace For The Office Workers

Decorative

It may be obvious that those with labor intense jobs are at risk for accidents and other safety issues. It is reported that 8 million slips and falls result in ER visits every single year. But safety in the workplace is a topic discussed by more than just labor workers.

25% workers work from behind a desk. And though they (office workers) may not be at a higher risk of loss of limb through working with machinery or other equipment, they are, none the less, at risk for other workplace injuries.

Some examples can be slips, falls, and back and eye strains. (source)

Today we are going to focus on posture. By focusing on good posture your employees can be more effective, focused, and productive during the day.

Upper Body

When thinking about upper body posture it is important to...

  • Keep your head in line with your torso.
  • Ears are in line with your torso.
  • Forearms and wrists should be relaxed and straight.
  • Elbows need to be kept at a 90 or 120 degree angle.

Mid Body

When thinking about your mid body posture it is important to...

  • Keep your shoulders back and relaxed.
  • Your back should be both back and supported by your chair.

Lower Body

When thinking about your lower body posture it is important to...

  • Make sure that your thighs and hips are well supported by a padded chair.
  • Your feet should be forward and supported by the floor or a footrest.

Here is a great infographic created by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety illustrating these tips.

A quality office chair can last up to 10 years (source)! However, if after sitting in your chair for a few hours your legs or lower body begin to become sore it may be time for a new chair.

Make sure when selecting a new chair that you keep all of the above in mind. A chair without good back and leg support can cause your team to feel fatigued. Many offices are going the route of the stand up desk.

Personally, I am thrilled with the concept of a standing desk however the cost can be a complete deterrent for many companies — especially a start up. If you are looking for some stand up desk options here is a list that can help you with that purchase.

With all these great tips about posture and workplace safety your employees will be more focused than ever! Here are some more tips on how you can get your employees engaged and moving today.
