Recruiting top talent is one of the biggest challenges HR faces these days. Check out how recruitment was done in the past and how technology has made it better, faster, and easier in this fun infographic.
Hear ye, hear ye! A few (or several) centuries ago, people in Europe got their news from the town crier. The town crier was an actual person who served as a spokesman for the king and brought the news to people before they could read. (Not everyone was taught to read in those days.) The tradition of town crier was born in Europe (specifically Greece and Rome with the Spartan Runners) and then spread out as the British Empire began colonizing most of the world.
Being a town crier came with its risks. Ever heard the phrase “don’t shoot the messenger"? That was a very real command, and town criers were protected by the law. As the king’s spokesperson, anything done to the town crier was considered done to the king, too, and therefore it was treason.
So even though town criers tended to be people of standing in the community (because you had to be able to read and write official proclamations), you could be risking your life by accepting the job.
Thankfully, spreading the news today usually isn’t a life-threatening situation. Disseminating and gathering news have both become much easier tasks, and much more social events, in fact, with the growth of technology, social media, and mobile devices that literally put information in the palm of your hand.
This “handy,” social information has revolutionized the way human resource managers recruit new employees and job seekers hunt for jobs. Social media offers new, cheaper, faster methods for both groups.
