I want to be a singer, a knitter, a reporter, a laugher, okay so maybe not a laugher but with employee assessment tools I could have landed on content marketer a lot sooner.
Do you have employees that are slightly disconnected? Maybe they are in the wrong position. Steve Jobs once said, " The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it."
This statement I always held dear at heart but in reality I thought it was shy of the truth. I kept searching all over, jumping in and out of jobs, positions. But, I always had an open mind and a love to try anything at least once. Who knew that having an open mind and trying new things is my passion.
Employee assessment tools are the key to decreasing turnover and making sure your employees are in the right position. New employees are looking for mentors (56%) and on the job training (76%). In my search for my passion and where I would like to call my work home, there are 3 concepts that stood out more than anything else. Use your employee assessment tools to analyze employee relationships, culture, and growth.
Employee Relationships
The number one reason I connected in a position — or knew it was time to move on — was the relationships I had with current team members and management. Your employees are looking for work friends. They may not want (but they may!) someone to hang out with outside of work but, what they are looking for is someone to connect with in the office. Someone to talk to. Someone to learn from.
This goes for management too! I wanted a permanent place that I could connect with. "66% of employees say their direct manager has an impact on their career," according to Debbie Muller at HR Acuity. Your employees want to connect with everyone on the team.
Your employee assessment tools can indicate just what each of your employees may require. Some members of your team may need more encouragement to continue improving. Some may simply need an assignment. You need to use your employee assessment tools to understand your employees so you can establish the employee relationship they are looking for!
I recently wrote a blog, How Giving Back is the Best Employee Engagement Activity. This blog talked about the millennials in your office; they want to be a part of something much bigger than the 9 - 5 work week. They want to connect. Employee relationships are step one of that connection. Step two, culture.
Culture
Next in line on the importance of finding my passion in my position was culture. I wanted to be a part of a team that wasn't just cubicles and clocking in and clocking out. It was important to me to be able to express myself. My grandfather, a very wise man, always said, "Now Karen Sue there is a time and a place and the dinner table is not the time or place." Now he mostly was talking about me singing at dinner but this life lesson that was taught so young has extended in everything I do.
Your employees are looking for the culture that accepts their time and place. Create a vibe in your office that will draw in your ideal employee. Include your employee assessment tools in your hiring process. Make sure to include a few questions regarding culture. This will make sure that you have the perfect fit for your office!
And finally...
Growth
Of course with finding my passion I was looking for a position with growth. I needed a spot that I could start in something that I kinda sorta liked so I could see if I would absolutely LOVE it later.
Once your employee assessment tools are completed evaluate the results. Place your employees in a position that will work for them in the long run. If they can not see their growth then they won't be productive in the entry level position. And remember, what works best for your employees will work best for you!
And just as Steve Jobs says, "... if you haven't found it yet, keep looking." If you haven't found the employee that fits your company keep looking. If you have an employee that fits but maybe isn't in the right position move them around. Allow them to keep looking for the perfect position.
