Videos are replacing documents for internal communication and simultaneously reshaping and improving employee engagement.
Move over, paper! Internal communication for employees is getting animated with video. Check out this fun infographic that shows how video is replacing the traditional office document.
Because we tend to think of videos mostly for entertainment, let’s briefly examine the top use for video outlined by the infographic: compliance training.
Using videos to improve compliance training
Compliance training teams and organizations face a number of challenges including:
- Keeping up to date with the latest national and international policies and regulations
- Monitoring compliance
- Building internal buy-in
- Strengthening training programs
For companies that must specifically follow FDA guidelines, non-compliance can result in heavy fines and critical delays in getting the product to market, which will result in loss of profits.
Everyone from brand-new hires to experienced staff must undergo educational training sessions to learn critical updates or adjustments. Topics can vary from drug development and laboratory practices to sterilization and medical writing.
Coordinating a mandatory meeting where everyone must sit together in a room for an hour learning the latest rules can be a logistical nightmare. So what’s the solution? Videos!
Here are some reasons why videos work so well for compliance training and policy updates:
- Personalization: Personal messages and customized content enhance comprehension and increase the connection between the trainer and trainees.
- Timeliness: Videos sent via email deliver new policy and procedure information in a timely manner and ensure everyone stays updated together.
- Privacy: Video emails can be sent privately (with certain technologies), ensuring confidentiality of sensitive materials. This is especially valuable for those who must comply with HIPAA rules.
Understanding why video has become so popular
In Leveraging video as a strategic internal communication channel, author Rebecca Richmond discusses a few reasons why video has become such an important business tool for internal communication:
The YouTube Phenomenon
“Data shared by that YouTube,” writes Richmond, “shows that over 24 hours of video is downloaded every minute, and even global leaders now leverage that platform to connect with the world in recognition of the huge message-distribution channel that video platforms represent.”
Meeting the expectations of employees
“As video becomes an increasingly popular tool for external communications, then,” says Richmond, “it’s perhaps not surprising that it seems to be an increasingly popular tool for internal communications. Indeed, when asked in our survey about their experiences with internal video, 53.6% of respondents agreed that employees now expect to see video internally because of wide use externally, whilst 92.4% agreed that visual communications are becoming a more important part of internal communications.”

Articulating intangible elements better
“Perhaps one of the most powerful business cases for a channel like video,” states Richmond, “is that its emotional connection and face-to-face element can make some of the more intangible elements of corporations more tangible.
Take values, for example. It can be difficult for employees to truly engage with a company’s values; to see any real connection between those stated ‘morals’ of the organization and their day job.
Video can bring a more human element to company values, especially if we can leverage UGC [user generated content] to bring those values to life – employees talking to other employees about what it means to them to be part of Company X or why they believe so strongly in the corporate mission based on their own experiences.”
Videos instead of documents for internal communication. Reshaping and improving employee engagement while saving trees.
