If you want your new hires to start on the right foot with your company, properly training them should be your highest priority. Thorough training helps familiarize them with your company's values and goals and prepares them for success in their individual roles. All this will ensure your new hires contribute well and stay loyal to the company. The company, in turn, experiences more success and increases the employee retention rate. However, for a new employee training to be successful, you should consider numerous elements. Here are some of the essential things to prepare for creating an effective newly hired employee training plan:

Polish your documentation and onboarding process.

The challenge doesn't end after choosing your top candidate. Proper onboarding and training are necessary to ensure your new hires perform to your expectations.

Utilizing an applicant tracking system is certainly helpful in this process. Having ats-friendly resume templates makes documentation a breeze by keeping all resumes in one place. Consequently, hiring managers can stay better organized and comply with EEOC.

An ATS helps avoid errors in candidate information during onboarding since it imports data directly to HR and payroll software. It also makes training smooth sailing since you can link training modules and track completed courses and certifications.

New call-to-action

Consult tenured employees on what to include in the training.

Consulting each department's manager is one of the best ways to know which key points to include in the training. After all, they are the ones who have first-hand experience with every procedure in their specific departments. This practice also helps increase inter-departmentalism by identifying what each role can learn about other departments. All areas cohesively working together benefits everyone. Just make sure each step is clear, concrete, and easy to follow.

Make the training task-oriented and ongoing.

Each new hire is unique. Therefore, it's crucial to make training flexible enough to adapt to each hire's strengths and weaknesses. Of course, covering the basics of working in your company is essential. However, incorporating unique elements for your new employees based on their career background and interview is also highly valuable. With that point, it's also a great idea to make the training task-oriented instead of a fixed-time activity. This practice ensures that every new hire has accumulated the training experience needed to perform well in their new role.

Encourage team-level training.

Facilitating corporate-level training helps cover the basics of your company. However, additional team-level training is an excellent option if you want to get your new hires up to speed faster. After all, a new team member needs to understand and adapt to the team culture and workflow. The team is their family within the company, so to speak, so creating connections and meaningful training is critical. This results in an even more productive team, which is a tremendous win for the company!

Accommodate each new hire's preferred learning method.

As mentioned earlier, every hire is unique, making their learning styles vary from one another, too. Therefore, making your training plan adaptable to different learning methods is only right. Doing so significantly assists each new employee to absorb the training more quickly, resulting in minimal instruction needed to perform effectively. The most common learning methods you'll most likely encounter among new hires are:

  • Visual: learns the process by watching others actively perform each step for the first few times.

  • Repetition: learns through performing the tasks repeatedly to familiarize themselves and perfect the technique.

  • Reading: learns by reading detailed written instructions and keeps them as a reference until they commit it to memory.

Develop excellent leaders and include them in the training process.

Excellent leaders are essential to ensure success for your staff, especially for the newly hired ones. So it is imperative to be meticulous when promoting or hiring someone for a managerial position. Ensure that you are promoting or hiring someone who could effectively coach and guide other employees. It's also a must to keep them involved in developing and executing your newly hired employee training plan.

Key Takeaway

Establishing an effective new employee training plan can be quite challenging. But by following these tips, developing a successful training plan is much easier and more effective. Just keep in mind that there's always room for improvement, so consistently ask new employees for feedback. This practice will help you further refine your future training plans.

"Ving Understands What Safety Managers Need to Improve Training"

One of the biggest problems I've had with safety training platforms is making the training easily accessible on mobile job sites, making it easy to upload in-house training, and technical issues with outdated software. All of those problems have been solved by Ving. It's well-thought-out and easy-to-use.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I love the QR code option. For example, you can print a QR code sticker that explains how to inspect fire extinguishers and post it next to the extinguisher so anyone doing monthly inspections isn't guessing based on training that was six months ago. They can review the training immediately.
